Managing Anxiety From Home: How Text Consultations Are Helping Thousands

For many people living with anxiety disorders, the act of seeking help is itself a source of immense stress. The thought of sitting in a crowded waiting room, making small talk with a receptionist, or maintaining eye contact during a consultation can feel overwhelming. This creates a painful paradox: the people who most need professional support are often the least able to access it through traditional channels.

Text-based consultations are changing this dynamic. By allowing patients to communicate with their doctor through written messages — at their own pace, from the safety of their own home — we're removing one of the most significant barriers to mental health care.

The clinical evidence supports this approach. A 2025 study published in The Lancet Digital Health found that patient satisfaction scores for text-based mental health consultations were comparable to video calls, and significantly higher than in-person visits for patients with social anxiety disorder.

Text consultations also offer practical benefits: patients can carefully compose their thoughts rather than trying to articulate complex emotions in real time, there's a written record they can refer back to, and the asynchronous nature means they can respond when they feel ready rather than under pressure.

Of course, text consultations aren't appropriate for all mental health situations. Crisis interventions, complex psychiatric assessments, and situations involving risk of self-harm require more immediate and direct communication. Responsible platforms make this distinction clear and provide appropriate escalation pathways.

What matters most is that patients have options. For thousands of people across the UK and Ireland, text-based consultations have been the gateway to finally getting the help they needed — and that's a transformation worth celebrating.
